Challenging the Darkness : Jaswant Singh Khalra

Sikh Heritage Month is proud to present the 2025 annual exhibit: *Challenging the Darkness*, featuring Jaswant Singh Khalra.

This exhibition honors Shaheed Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra, a fearless Sikh activist who exposed the Indian state's brutal counterinsurgency in Punjab during the 1990s. He uncovered the abduction, torture, and mass killings of thousands of Sikhs, many cremated as "unidentified persons" by security forces.

Bhai Khalra embodied the Sikh principle of Gareeb di Rakhiya, Jarvanay di Bhakiya (protection of the weak, destruction of tyrants). His work gave voice to Sikh martyrs while challenging state oppression. In 1995, he was abducted, tortured, and killed for his fearless advocacy.

Using rare documents, testimonies, and photographs, this exhibit sheds light on how his efforts exposed the Indian state's crimes from 1984 to 1995. His legacy continues to inspire the Sikh struggle for sovereignty and justice.

The exhibit runs from April 5 to June 29, 2025.
